Depreciation Methods Explained: SL, SYD, DB
Straight line, sum-of-the-years-digits and declining balance on the same £48,000 asset. What each schedule does to book value, to tax, and to the DEPR worksheet.
Free online · No sign-up · Works on mobile
A faithful browser emulator of the Texas Instruments BA II Plus, plus ten focused calculators that show every formula they use. Built for CFA and CFP candidates, finance students and anyone who left their calculator on the desk at home.
Ready
The real thing, in the browser
TVM, cash flow, bond, amortization, depreciation, statistics, interest conversion, date, profit and breakeven — all nine rows behave the way the exam-room device does, and every reading is shown to six decimal places rather than two.
Ten focused tools
Prefer typing into a form? Each page takes plain inputs, shows the formula with your numbers substituted in, and prints the schedule or chart behind the answer.
What you get
Open access
Every worksheet and every dedicated calculator is available immediately — no sign-up, no trial, no feature held back. Nothing you type is uploaded, because the maths runs in your browser.
Faithful behaviour
Chain arithmetic follows the same order of operations as the hardware, parentheses nest to the same depth, and results round for display without losing precision internally.
Keyboard control
Digits, operators, Enter, Backspace, Esc and the arrow keys all map straight through, so a full TVM problem takes seconds on a laptop.
Why this one
There are plenty of calculator pages that get the layout right and the behaviour wrong. The difference shows up on the questions that matter — sign conventions, uneven cash flows, settlement dates.
Who is behind thisThe 2ND key arms and disarms, CPT waits for the variable you want, and every worksheet steps with ↑ and ↓ the way the hardware does. Practise here and your fingers already know the exam-room device.
Time value of money, IRR, bond price and yield, the depreciation methods and the regression models are each covered by unit tests checked against published worked examples before anything ships.
The dedicated pages print the formula they used with your figures substituted in, next to the schedule or chart behind the result — so you can hand in the method, not only the answer.
No download, no sign-up, no cookie wall. These are static pages with the maths running locally in your browser, which is also why they open fast on a phone in a lecture hall.
About the tool
The Texas Instruments BA II Plus is the financial calculator most finance courses assume you own, and one of only two models CFA Institute lets you carry into the exam room. This site is a free online BA II Plus calculator: the same device rebuilt for a browser tab, with the keypad, the display and all nine worksheets where your fingers expect them.
Nothing installs and nothing is uploaded. Press the keys with a mouse, a fingertip or the keyboard and the arithmetic runs inside the page, so your figures never leave your device and a TI BA II Plus calculator online still works on a phone with one bar of signal. No account, no trial: using the BA II Plus calculator online is free in the plain sense.
Some visitors own the hardware and want to practise without carrying it; others do not own one yet and have a problem set due tonight. Both get the whole device.
The keypad is only half the calculator. Most exam-relevant work happens inside the worksheets reached with the 2ND key, and all nine are here:
Each worksheet also has a dedicated page here if you would rather type into labelled fields than step through registers — each one printing the formula with your own figures substituted in.
Getting started
The device answers to a rhythm rather than a menu: type the number first, then press the key it belongs to. Five habits cover almost everything, on the emulator above or on the hardware.
Clear before you start
A register left over from the last question is the commonest cause of a wrong answer, because the calculator holds every value until told otherwise. On the hardware, 2ND then FV empties the TVM registers; here, one press of CE|C resets the whole device.
Type the number, then press its key
Enter 360 and press N; enter 6.5 and press I/Y. Rates go in as percentages — 6.5, never 0.065 — and N counts payment periods, so thirty years of monthly payments is 360 rather than 30.
Get the signs right
Money coming to you is positive and money leaving you is negative. A mortgage is a positive PV with a negative PMT. If every figure points the same way the equation cannot balance and the calculator returns an error.
Check P/Y and C/Y
2ND then I/Y shows payments per year and compounding periods per year. They survive a TVM clear and, on the physical device, a battery change — which is why a monthly answer occasionally comes back twelve times too large.
Press CPT, then the unknown
With four of the five TVM registers entered, CPT followed by the fifth key solves it. Inside a worksheet, ↑ and ↓ step through the fields and CPT computes whichever line is showing.
That is the entire grammar of the calculator; everything else — bonds, depreciation schedules, regression — is the same pattern inside a worksheet. For worked numbers, start with how to use the BA II Plus, then time value of money step by step.
No. Searches for a BA 2 Plus calculator, a TI BA 2 Plus calculator and a Texas BA 2 Plus calculator all point at the same product: Texas Instruments prints the name in Roman numerals — BA II Plus — and the digit spelling is what people type from memory. It is also why the maker appears both as Texas Instruments and, singular, as Texas Instrument.
One distinction is real: the BA II Plus Professional. Same layout, same keystroke grammar, plus net future value, modified duration, modified internal rate of return and discounted payback — and it is exam-approved alongside the standard model, which is what this emulator reproduces. The BA II Plus versus Professional comparison covers the difference.
Honest limits
CFA candidates are the largest group, because the exam permits only two calculators and this is one of them — and with the clock running, keystrokes matter as much as the formula. CFP and FRM candidates come next, then finance students working through discounting problems, and analysts who want a bond price without a spreadsheet.
Worth saying plainly: no online calculator can be used in the exam itself. CFA Institute allows the physical TI BA II Plus, including the Professional, and the HP 12C — no phones, tablets or laptops. Practise here, rehearse on the device you will carry in, and check your provider’s current policy. The CFA calculator tips guide covers the settings worth fixing first.
Two differences from the hardware, stated rather than hidden: readings show six decimal places instead of two, and one press of CE|C resets the whole device, where the physical key clears the entry first and the display second. Everything else follows the original — chain arithmetic order, parenthesis depth, 2ND arming and disarming, worksheet fields in their real order. This is an independent implementation for learning and practice, not affiliated with or endorsed by Texas Instruments.

From the blog
Straight line, sum-of-the-years-digits and declining balance on the same £48,000 asset. What each schedule does to book value, to tax, and to the DEPR worksheet.
Building the cash flow series is the hard part, not the discounting. A worked project from revenue down to NPV, IRR, payback, PI and MIRR in one CF entry.
A nominal rate quoted per year is not what you earn. How compounding frequency changes the effective rate, how to convert both ways in ICONV, and what it costs.
FAQ
What people ask most before their first exam — including the two spellings, the phone question, and what an online calculator can and cannot do for you on test day.
Yes — every calculator on this site is free, with no account and no usage limit. If you searched for a BA II Plus calculator online free of charge, this is it: no trial, no card, no worksheet held back. The emulator runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter never leave your device.
It reproduces the layout, keystroke sequences and all nine worksheets of the standard BA II Plus — TVM, cash flow, bond, amortization, depreciation, statistics, interest conversion, date, and profit/breakeven. Two things are deliberately different: readings are shown to six decimal places instead of two, and one press of CE|C resets the whole device rather than clearing the entry first. It is an independent implementation built for learning and practice, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Texas Instruments.
Yes. Texas Instruments prints the model name in Roman numerals — BA II Plus — and “BA 2 Plus” is simply what people type from memory. So a TI BA 2 Plus calculator, a Texas BA 2 Plus calculator and a Texas BA II Plus calculator are the same thing, and so is a Texas Instruments BA II Plus calculator — or a Texas Instrument BA II Plus calculator, singular, as it is often typed. This emulator covers all of them. The only genuinely different model is the BA II Plus Professional, which adds net future value, modified duration, modified IRR and discounted payback to the same layout.
All nine: time value of money, cash flow with NPV and IRR, bond price and yield, amortization, depreciation, one- and two-variable statistics with four regression models, interest conversion, date arithmetic, and profit margin with breakeven. Each also has its own page on this site if you would rather type into labelled fields than step through worksheet registers.
Yes. The keypad is laid out for a touchscreen and the whole page is static HTML with the maths running locally, so it loads on a phone or tablet without an app and keeps working if the connection drops mid-question. On a laptop you can drive it entirely from the keyboard instead of clicking keys.
No. CFA Institute permits only two physical models in the exam room — the TI BA II Plus (including the Professional) and the HP 12C — and no phones, tablets or laptops. Use this emulator to drill the keystrokes, then rehearse them on the hardware you will actually carry in. Always check your exam provider’s current calculator policy before test day.
Clear first, then work in the order the device expects: type a number and press the key it belongs to, keep money coming in positive and money going out negative, check P/Y and C/Y before you trust a monthly figure, and finish with CPT and the key you want solved. The five steps are written out above, and the guides walk through full worked examples.
Enter each known value and press its key straight after the number — for example 360 N, 6 I/Y, 100000 PV — then press CPT followed by the key you want. With four of the five TVM variables entered, the fifth is determined.
That is the cash-flow sign convention, not an error. Money leaving you is negative and money coming to you is positive, so a loan entered as a positive PV returns a negative PMT. Enter one side of the deal as a negative number and the signs will line up.
Yes, and skipping it is the most common source of wrong answers. On this emulator one press of CE|C resets everything — every register, every worksheet, back to a fresh device. For narrower clears, 2ND then FV empties just the TVM registers and 2ND then CE|C empties just the worksheet you are in. On the physical device, CE|C clears the entry first and the display second, so reach for 2ND then +/− there.
Ready when you are
The emulator is one click away, needs no account, and remembers your colour skin for next time.
